I stayed at the bedside for almost 20 years before I let myself leave.
I loved labor and delivery. I still do, in a lot of ways. But somewhere around year eighteen, the short staffing, the missed meals, and the emotional weight of the job caught up with me all at once. I remember sitting in my car in the parking lot before a shift, unable to make myself walk in.
I didn't have a plan. I just knew I couldn't keep doing it the same way. So I started looking sideways instead of only forward, at roles that still used my nursing brain without asking for another twelve-hour shift on my feet. That search eventually led me into medical device sales, and it's what I now help other nurses do for themselves.
Every nurse's path looks different. I can't promise you a specific job, a specific salary, or a specific timeline, but I can show you exactly how I found mine.
